When the Epic Group decided on building a new, state of the art conference center, they wanted it to be a unique, exciting experience for their customers. They accomplished this goal with architect Cuningham’s striking cave-like design. The façade system was challenging, as the major expanses of glass needed to be as minimalist and transparent as possible. In some areas, the overall single span of exterior façade is over 50 feet. To achieve such tall spans, the project team brought Cupples on to design and engineer a steel truss system to carry the enormous loads while retaining the high level of transparency desired by the owner. Welded steel plates form the main framing member, or “mast,” elegantly slimmed down by the use of horizontal truss props and thin “sag” rods. With transparency in mind, all glass is low iron and structurally siliconed to the framing element.
